WELLNESS EXAMS

Comprehensive Preventive Care for Your Pet

Routine wellness exams are a cornerstone of preventive veterinary care. These regular checkups allow us to identify potential health concerns early—often before symptoms appear—ensuring timely and effective treatment.

During each wellness exam, we will:

  • Review your pet’s medical history and behavior

  • Evaluate any existing health conditions

  • Perform a thorough physical examination, including:

    • Temperature check

    • Eye, ear, dental, and skin assessment

    • Cardiopulmonary evaluation (heart and lungs)

    • Joint and mobility assessment

  • Provide age- and lifestyle-appropriate vaccinations

  • Recommend dietary and wellness plans

  • Discuss parasite prevention and control strategies

  • Conduct diagnostic testing, as needed

Parasite Prevention
We will advise on year-round protection against common parasites such as fleas, ticks, intestinal worms, and heartworms—critical for your pet’s overall health and quality of life.

The Importance of Regular Exams
Semiannual physical exams are the most effective way to ensure your pet remains healthy, comfortable, and active at every life stage.

IMMUNIZATIONS

Vaccinations for Dogs and Cats

Vaccinations are a vital component of preventive care, protecting your pet from serious and contagious diseases. We tailor each vaccination plan based on your pet’s lifestyle, environment, and risk factors.

For Dogs:
Core vaccines include:

  • Rabies

  • Distemper

  • Leptospirosis

  • Bordetella (kennel cough)

  • Lyme disease

Additional vaccines may be recommended depending on your dog’s exposure risks, including:

  • Canine influenza

For Cats:
Core vaccines include:

  • Rabies

  • Feline distemper

For cats with outdoor access or increased exposure, we may also recommend the feline leukemia vaccine

EMERGENCY & CRITICAL CARE

Medical emergencies can occur without warning. Having a trusted veterinary team available makes all the difference. Our hospital provides emergency services to ensure your pet receives prompt, expert care in urgent situations.

Common emergencies include:

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Severe injuries

  • Sudden weakness or collapse

  • Persistent vomiting or diarrhea

  • Seizures

  • Ingestion of toxic substances

If your pet is experiencing any of these symptoms—or you feel something isn’t right—please seek veterinary care immediately.

During emergency visits, our team will assess your pet’s condition, stabilize them, and begin diagnostic testing and treatment. We are equipped to manage a wide range of urgent medical and surgical needs with the goal of relieving pain, preventing complications, and optimizing recovery.

DENTAL CARE & SURGERY

Oral health is essential to your pet’s overall well-being. Without proper dental care, pets can develop periodontal disease, which can lead to pain, tooth loss, and even affect vital organs like the heart, liver, and kidneys.

During routine wellness exams, we assess dental health and recommend appropriate care. This may include at-home oral hygiene guidance or professional dental cleaning.

Professional cleanings include:

  • Comprehensive oral exam

  • Thorough cleaning and polishing

  • Early detection and treatment of dental issues

By addressing dental issues proactively, we help keep your pet comfortable, healthy, and pain-free.

MICROCHIPPING

Microchipping offers a permanent, reliable method of identifying your pet if they become lost. The chip—about the size of a grain of rice—is implanted beneath the skin between the shoulder blades in a quick, nearly painless procedure.

Each microchip contains a unique ID number linked to your contact information. Veterinary hospitals, shelters, and animal control facilities nationwide use scanners to read microchips, greatly improving the chances of reuniting lost pets with their families.

Unlike collars or tags, a microchip is permanent and cannot be removed or lost. We recommend microchipping for all pets, regardless of whether they live indoors or outdoors.

PET HEALTH CERTIFICATES for Travel

Whether traveling domestically or internationally, pets often require a valid health certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian. Mt. Pleasant Animal Medical Center is USDA-accredited to issue both domestic and international health certificates, ensuring your pet meets travel requirements.

Travel regulations vary by destination, so please confirm specific requirements ahead of time. For the most up-to-date information, visit:  aphis.usda.gov/aphis/pet-travel.

General travel tips:

  • Bring vaccination records and a current rabies certificate

  • Check airline-specific pet policies before flying

  • Obtain a valid health certificate prior to departure

COMPASSIONATE End-of-Life SERVICES

End-of-life care is centered on ensuring your pet’s final days are filled with comfort, dignity, and peace. We work closely with families to manage pain, reduce stress, and provide emotional support during this difficult time.

When the time comes, humane euthanasia allows for a peaceful passing in a calm and loving environment. Families are given time and space to say goodbye in a way that honors the special bond shared with their pet.

Our goal is to offer compassionate guidance and support—ensuring that every decision is made with care, respect, and your pet’s best interests in mind.

PHARMACEUTICALS

Our in-house pharmacy provides safe, high-quality medications prescribed specifically for your pet’s health needs. This includes:

  • Antibiotics

  • Pain management

  • Chronic disease treatments

  • Parasite preventives

With guidance from our veterinary team, you can feel confident that your pet is receiving accurate, effective treatment to support healing and long-term wellness.

General Surgery and Procedures

SPAYING and NEUTERING

Spaying and neutering contribute to longer, healthier lives for pets by reducing the risk of infections, certain cancers, and unwanted litters.

Each procedure includes:

  • A thorough pre-surgical exam

  • General anesthesia

  • Advanced surgical techniques

  • Continuous monitoring and post-op care

Our team ensures that your pet is comfortable, safe, and cared for throughout the entire process.

SOFT TISSUE SURGERY

Our team is highly skilled in performing a wide range of soft tissue surgeries. Your pet’s safety and comfort are always our highest priorities, which is why we use advanced anesthesia and surgical techniques to ensure the best possible care.

After surgery, your pet will be closely monitored as the anesthesia wears off, and we take every step to keep them comfortable throughout recovery.

ORTHOPEDIC PROCEDURES

Orthopedic surgery addresses conditions affecting bones, joints, and ligaments, including:

  • Fractures

  • Hip dysplasia

  • Cruciate ligament injuries

  • Chronic arthritis

We collaborate with board-certified specialists to provide advanced surgical techniques and personalized rehabilitation plans, with the goal of restoring function, reducing pain, and enhancing your pet’s mobility and quality of life.

Advanced Diagnostics

RADIOLOGY

Digital X-rays provide high-resolution images in minutes, allowing for rapid diagnosis of:

  • Broken bones

  • Joint issues

  • Foreign objects

  • Internal abnormalities

Digital technology reduces radiation exposure and allows for easy sharing with specialists when needed.

ULTRASONOGRAPHY

Ultrasound is a non-invasive diagnostic tool that uses sound waves to create real-time images of your pet’s internal organs. It is used to diagnose conditions such as:

  • Tumors

  • Pregnancy

  • Organ enlargement

  • Gastrointestinal issues

  • Foreign body ingestion

Ultrasound is fast, painless, and often performed without sedation, keeping your pet comfortable during the exam.

OCULAR TONOMETRY

Tonometry measures the pressure inside your pet’s eyes and is essential for diagnosing conditions like glaucoma, which can cause pain or vision loss if left untreated.

This quick, non-invasive test can be performed during a routine exam and plays an important role in preserving your pet’s ocular health.
